Question of the day

How many hours of sleep do you get daily?

Okay, pardon my curiousity, but I really wana know how many hours of sleep you get daily, and if you are functioning well (or not really well, hmm...). You see...I usually need eight hours of sleep to be well-rested, but due to a heavier than expected schedule I have this year with various commitments, I have only been getting an average of 6 hours for the past two weeks. For the first few days, I felt awful waking up with minor headaches and puffy eyes with stinging sensation. Not fun, and it usually hinders me from putting on contact lens. Then, I'm not exceptionally productive during the day, and often times feel tired. However, after a week of those crappy days, I am now waking up feeling okay...no headaches and red eye. I am also more productive and able to do more things since I have more waking hours at hand. Okay, so maybe I don't look that great without sufficient sleep, quoting my friend Patrick whom I ocassionally meet at school, "You look tired."

Ahh....(no wonder he doesn't have a gf! :p)

So, back to you. How many hours of sleep do you get?

I need atleast six hours of sleep. Even if my alarm rang, and i only had less than 6 hours of naps, I will doze back, and wake up automatically after I had six hours of sleep.

Again, as you mentioned about your schedule, I also have heavy schedule this semester. I prefer 12 hours of sleep, if I can afford it....

Btw, I'm linking you from my blog after this. Hope that you will be fine with this.

6 hours...and you're productive all day?

Sure, and I have linked yours to mine. It's easier this way than to look for your blog through the comments.

athen,

Mr. RedBull buddy? Er, that's okay...I befriend Mr. Coffee, but not so much because it ain't good for ya. And RedBull has more dangerous substance in it. Well, gota take care of your health too right...

Mei,

Dude...3-5 hours a day?!? CRAZY ar? How do you do that? Shish...rest more! I think we're all better off with sufficient rest which would then increase our productivity. We should do a statistical regression on that!!

Wow...seeing the responses we have so far, I think we live hazardous lifestyle with insufficient sleep and on top of that adds fake stimulant in our bodies to keep us going. Then when our bodies fail, we chuck medication in to keep us alive...and the funny thing is, we live longer??!

Hey Grace! Well, I do have a very busy schedule this year also, as you have noted yourself, but I have to force myself to get enought sleep, otherwise I cannot function well. I need AT LEAST 8 hours of sleep per day, if not 9. And you may think that in that case I musnèt get enought time to study and do my homework, right? But although I don't have as much time as you guys get from not sleeping, I am more productive, more joyful, and fell much better emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I tried at the beginning of the year not to sleep that much, and it created a cofee adict, stressed, sick and almost paranoid Joliane. So yah! SLEEP, and you will life a long healthy life.

Hey Grace, let me tell you what the research says! (For once I feel knowledgable!)

According to a study I read, people who sleep 6-7 hours a night have the longest lifespan. However, that said, this was just correlational data. It doesn't mean if you sleep more or less you will live longer/shorter.

The number of hours you need to sleep to maintain a healthy level of functioning varies from person. Some people can apparently survive with just 5 hours of sleep per night and there are no signs that they are any less healthy than people who sleep 8 hours a night.

Anyhow, my point is that if you are not functioning well with 6 hours of sleep per night, then you should sleep more. I sleep at least 7- 8 hours a night. I can't really tahan more than 3 days on 6 hours of sleep.

Heyo Jo,

Well, I don't think it's so much that we don't want to get more sleep than we actually have too much things to get done so we need more time.

Wai Han,

Wah...okok, future psych gal. Yeah, I agree, it really depends on the person. But isn't there also the "conditioning" theory? Because I feel that the second week I had that average amount of sleep, I felt okay, not like the first week. Then yesterday wow, I woke up immediately after 6 hours of sleep (but I went back to sleep lah)...so I'm thinking my brain and body are maybe getting used to 6 hours of sleep! What do you think miss psyc?

Conditioning? haha I'm not sure how to apply it in this context. I suppose the body is quite amazing in that it can adjust itself.

I say that if you can get by with 6 hours of sleep now, then go for it! You won't be any unhealthier by sleeping less. But if you body start to show signs of not being able to cope, then you should sleep more. There is no right or wrong here.

Wah, thankfully you're still a student and this psyc advice is free of charge! Eh, next time got discount or not?

What are some signs that the body is not able to cope?

I get 6-7 hours of sleep. I'm usually incapable of getting 8 hours of sleep. At times like this when I have no school or job, I function fine. When I have school or a job, I occasionally get tired during the day, but I restrict the coffee to once or twice a week.

Alex dude,

You're not working or studying...aren't you supposed to be sleeping more then?!?!?

haha I don't know everything in psych unfortunately. I only read up on that cos I was curious. I think I sleep wayyy too much...

Not coping well would be like all those things you listed that happened to you on your first week of less sleep. Plus, you just kind of know if you aren't coping well... your body will feel different, in a negative way..

I can't seem to get more sleep, Grace. Right now, I have my alarm set for 7:30. If I go to bed at 11:30 or midnight, or maybe even 12:30 I can't sleep until my alarm goes off.

Alex, doesn't sound like you need an alarm clock then. Maybe you can donate it...

I still need the alarm clock to motivate me to get out of bed.

why do you need an alarm to motivate you to get out of bed when you can't sleep and is awake anywayz??!?

10 hours from me if left unchecked.

8 hours is optimal, provided I don't accidentally disarm the snooze mode..

My longest record is 16 hours.

Wah voon, 16 hours? Maybe you should try for 24 hours the next time! Hmm...I wonder what is the longest on Guiness World of Records...
